Student-Led Conferences
2:20 PM
I have been doing some research on conferences for next year, and I keep reading literature about student-led conferences; although I have done a version of student-led conferences, I have never done it completely. Since I have had a lot of free time on my hands, I decided to make a form for students to complete before they begin their conference. What I really like about this form is that after students rate how they think they are doing, they then choose a statement from each section to be added to their goals for the semester. I love this because it helps students to be reflective and self-directed. If you would like a editable copy of the form please leave a comment with your email and I will send it over. I would put it on Google Docs but my computer does not want to work with me today :) I hope you find this form useful. Also, if you have done student-led conferences I would love to know what you did, how it went and what advice you may have.
*update- I have attached a copy of this form for all those who have asked. It is a tiny bit different due to losing the original :)

Would you please send me a copy at davis.ashleyb@gmail.com? Thanks! I've never done student-led conferences, but am interested in learning more.
ReplyDeleteThis is a really great idea. I've just finished my parent/teacher conferences and many of the kids came along with a Reflection Sheet. It would be great to have some extra pointers and have them take more of an active role. Can you please send the template to downunderteacherblog@gmail.com? Thank you!

I did student led conferences one year (with 5th graders). They got a rubric with an area for them to rate themselves and an area for me to rate them. We went over the rubric whole group one step at a time and discussed how to talk about it with their parents. On conference night I had 4 conferences going on at a time (in the 4 corners of the room) and I floated around to each parent and child. It worked very well but took plenty of prep so the kids would know what to do.
ReplyDeleteI love your form!

ReplyDeleteThanks for your willingness to share!! :)
I've never done them, but my daughter does them twice a year at her school...it's great because her advisor (homeroom teacher) works with her to help make sure that the goals she's set for herself are clear and quantifiable. She also holds her accountable both before and during the conferences when it's time to face the hard truths about her performance. What is really great is that the teacher only "guides" the conversation using the Socratic method of questioning..."what do you think you could do differently to get a better grade?" "Why do you think your grade in this subject is lower/higher?" It's very empowering for the students and it helps the teachers and parents transition out of the "bad guy" role. Two thumbs up!

I would like to have a copy to use for conferences in March. Thanks! Jandsall4him@yahoo.com
ReplyDeleteI would LOVE a copy. We are beginning Student Led Conferences in two weeks. I have made student portfolios on Evernote...great site! The kids are having fun selecting work. They can't stop taking snapshots of their best work. With evernote, you can also record voices. Some of students want to showcase their fluent reading skills. Too cute! I made a quick form, that's not nearly as cute as the one above, for each student to complete for their artifacts. They had to choose one artifact from each subject area. The students then had to write the title of the artifact, subject area, topic, and CCSS. Then, they had to write the steps for demonstration purposes (the goal is the teach the parents). I think now all I need is a cute form like the one above. Could you send that to my personal email? THANKS A MILLION! swanson.cath@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteI would love a copy. Looks great for intermediate kiddos.
