Classroom Theme Days

Next week my grade level is meeting to revamp our theme days and units. I hoped to hear from many of you about theme days in your classroom. Last year we did Polar Express Day.  I think we are getting a little tired of doing the same thing every year, not to mention that so many other grade levels do something similar. We wanted to keep a themed day for the week before Christmas break, but we want something new. I thought maybe just a winter theme or snow theme of some sort would be cute. When I say themed day I mean the whole day revolves around this idea. We incorporate our math, science and reading around this theme.
We already have a great theme day for Halloween and Spring, but we need to seriously revamp our winter theme. Are there any special things you do in your class other than just a party. Are there books centered around this theme, are their centers, crafts, poetry, writing or any other subject?

  1. We've done Christmas Around the World. We made passports and that last week of school we rotated classrooms and each teacher taught about a different country and how they celebrated in that country.

  2. Christina Bainbridge has a Snow Fun Day unit that includes activities using Snowflake Bentley and I Know a Cold Lady Who Swallowed Some Snow. You can find it here - http://www.teachingoasis.com/resources.htm#specialdays. It is under Special Days. I also have some activities that I have done to go with it. If you are interested in them, just let me know.

  3. For a theme before Christmas, how about using the book - How the Grinch Stole Christmas?

  4. We also do Christmas Around the world but we don't rotate to different classrooms. Many of the teachers on my team did NOT want to do that. So.....each teacher took a country and came up with lessons/activities to do each day. We put each mini unit in a box and they rotated to the different rooms each day. My country is Germany and I found a powerpoint, they made a hat (sentence strip and a ellison punched evergreeen tree that the kids decorated), and had a coloring activity for the students. It is optional to share a snack to do. I used the Little Debbie christmas tree cakes for my special snack since the tree tradition began in Germany. I am moving to K this year so I would love to hear about special events people celebrate with their kids/grade levels.
